A dog Behavior Specialist is someone who has credited extensive education. The example I usually use is that a nurses aide would be like a dog trainer. No education or instruction is required anyone can call themselves a dog trainer Some have just a few hours of instruction.
A dog behavior specialist is like a psychologist. My education includes canine anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, diet and nutrition, disease, disease treatment and prevention, , surgery, labs and other curricular requirements that a veterinary technician would take. I also have education in canine neuropsychology, normal behavior and learning, development and growth, abnormal behavior, clinical behavioral medicine, umweldt, ethology and the language of dogs. I have also studied specific areas of behavior such as canine aggression, canine separation anxiety, puppy training and learning, canine developmental stages, rehabilitation of shelter dogs, puppy temperament training, restoring harmony between animals in the home, canine body postures, extinction bursts and spontaneous recovery. I have taken more classes and seminars on behavior specific topics and continue to attend classes and seminars yearly.

Q: How long will behavior modification take?

A: How long it takes and how many calls it takes depends on a lot of factors.  The more consistent you are with your dog and the closer you follow the behavior modification plan, the faster your dog will change. Consistency and commitment are the key. It also depends on your dogs problems and how severe they are. I have had clients that only needed one consultation, I have had clients that needed many. The average is about 4-5 1 hour visits.
